Проблема с красными стрелками в µTorrent

  • topic 1, topic 2.1, topic 2.2, Совместная работа KAV/KIS с P2P-клиентом µTorrent
  • Шаги:
    1. Пропатчил TCPIP.SYS до 100
    2. µTorrent Preferences → Advanced → bt.allow_same_ip = TRUE
    3. µTorrent Preferences → Advanced → net.max_halfopen = 25
  • Очевидно, версия 1.7.2 НАМНОГО более чувствительна к ограничению в TCPIP.SYS, нежели предыдущие. Я прочитал много постов на тему качества работы 1.7.2 и везде первым средством лечения есть патчинг TCPIP.SYS.
    Или ещё короче – у всех у кого красные стрелки (особенно касается тех что на Vista) – смотрите что у вас стоит в µTorrent Preferences → Advanced → net.max_halfopen, записывайте на память, и выставляете 4. µTorrent после этого лучше перезапустить – так быстрее сбросится очередь заблокированных tcp-соединений (если она была). Если после этого “красные стрелки” исчезают – плавно повышайте net.max_halfopen, но не дальше чем до 8. (если у вас непатченый tcpip.sys, или не дальше 80% от пропатченного лимита).
    Заодно: Start → Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Event Viewer (или ещё быстрее: Win+R, eventvwr.msc), там переключиться на System и посмотрите за тот день когда были таймауты – есть ли сообщения типа Event ID: 4226 “TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.”?

Running torrent on Linux server

Nowadays a lot of compact devices (like media players or TVs) have Torrent client on board, why should anyone bother about the exotic way of running it? Well, in my case the main reason was that I was migrating µTorrent from my laptop to standalone server to allow 24h non-stop feeding. Let's put altogether:
  • It was important for me to have less fuzz with migration of about 100 torrents from my laptop. Perhaps that would also be possible to migrate to µTorrent for Linux, but I also get used to UI interface & settings (no need to explore Web UI which is also buggy by the way).
  • Running µTorrent on server gives me the possibility for non-stop feeding and downloading on demand.
  • Running µTorrent on Linux also have a bonus of configuring QoS in case torrent traffic gets annoying. Yes, I know about build-in bandwidth settings, however the typical task is usually “I want µTorrent to consume all bandwidth unless there is something else hungry for it”. In this case all traffic for internal network should go via server that unfortunately, adds one more point of failure in the chain. Hopefully I'll come back to this later.

Technically all above can be solved with following setup:

  • We will run TightVnc server on Linux. It acts as X-Server and µTorrent will display it's UI on this server. Bonus is that TightVnc has clients both for Linux and Windows (and also Java client), which will allow you to connect to under from any (popular) platform. I start it with: 
    su -l -c "tightvncserver -geometry 1280x800 -depth 24 -alwaysshared" myuserid
  • We will run µTorrent with Wine. Certain µTorrent versions (like v1.8.5) do not pass installation under certain versions of Wine (can be cured with /noinstall command line option) and some don't start under Wine at all (for example µTorrent v3.2 in Wine v1.2.3), so you'd better double check here that certain version was tested under Wine. When XServer is started, 
    DISPLAY=:1.0 su -l -c "/usr/local/wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/uTorrent/uTorrent.exe /noinstall" myuserid
  • Perhaps your torrent data has changed location under new environment. So either select torrents and apply Set Download Location (see this advise) or simply replace paths in resume.dat using your favourite (binary) editor. Far worked for me just fine.
  • Keep µTorrent window on separate workspace (if you use Xfce) & collapsed. Also disable Show current speed in title bar to reduce number of UI update events.

What µTorrent client to choose? Well, I personally have stopped on v1.8.5, because:

  • v2.0.4 already consumes around 5% CPU to function in average load (280 torrents, 10 active). I think this is because overloaded UI. Tightvnc needs also to response to any UI update (even if no client is connected), and will consume 1-2% CPU. In most scenarios this caused CPU to heat + CPU fan to be more noisy. Besides this can potentially overheat HDD decreasing it's lifetime. With v1.8.5 I have less then 3% of CPU load – everybody is happy!
  • I do not need streaming features of v3.x. More over last and only one time I tried it for AVI file it simply did not work. uTP, UPnP, DHT, magnet links (and other scaring staff) are in v1.8.5.
  • The sad trend shows the disappointing statistics: µTorrent executable size was increasing by 100KB in 2007-2011 (from 100K to 500K), but in 2011-2012 it was doubled in size (from 500K to 1M). Perhaps it's still the smallest torrent client, but I doubt. The only thing I will miss in early µTorrent version is start-up time (solved in 3.0 by loading torrents asynchronously).
